Talk by Ian Johnston

Ian recently gave a talk on his recent publications, Waiting for the Owl and The Mozi: a complete translation (Columbia University Press), while Susan Collis spoke about Chinese Ink painting at the Asia Bookroom in Canberra.

A Chinese interlude

An afternoon of poetry, philosophy and music to celebrate the release of Waiting for the Owl, to be launched by Barry Hill. Musical accompaniment by Fen Zhou, a virtuoso interpreter of traditional music, on the Chines lute (pipa). Free event. Congratulations to Graham Nunn for a haiku sequence, selected for Best Australian Poetry 2009 (UQP).


Haiku Pacific Rim Conference

In September, Pardalote authors Beverley George, Ron Moss, Graham Nunn and Lyn Reeves attended the fourth Haiku Pacific Rim Conference in Terrigal, NSW. Beverley convened the highly successful international conference, Graham was the emcee for all events and Lyn and Ron gave audiovisual presentations of haiga. Lyn presented the exhibition Breathmarks, the collaboration between Hunter Island Press printmakers and the haiku poets from Watersmeet haiku group. (These beautiful prints are available from HIP). Lyn's report of the conference appears in the December issue of Famous Reporter.


Reading of haiku

Chinese scholar and poet Ian Johnston, author of Singing of Scented Grass: verses from the Chinese spoke about Chinese poetry and read from his work at Chado the Way of Tea. on 12 September. Poets from Watersmeet gave a reading of haiku related to tea at Chado in August.


Poetic responses

Karen Knight and Sue Moss began the ekphrastic experiences at Salamanca Collection with poetic responses to their July exhibition. Gina Mercer and Ron Moss gave their poetic responses to the paintings of Dallas Bromley in August.
