Biography
Gina Mercer's poetry is widely recognised as high quality and significant work. She has taught creative writing and literature in universities and communities for over 20 years and is currently the editor of Island, Tasmania's flagship literary journal. As well as her poetry she has published a novel, Parachute Silk (Spinifex Press, 2001) and two academic books.
Her first poetry collection, The Ocean in the Kitchen, was published by Five Islands Press in 1999 as part of the highly competitive New Poets Program and ran to a second edition. Her second poetry publication, Night Breathing, was Volume 51 (2006) in Picaro Press' very successful Wagtail series. She has performed her poetry to acclaim in cities throughout Australia and has been writer-in-residence at Varuna, The Tasmanian Writers' Centre and the Katherine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre.
